The Thai-Burma border town of Kanchanaburi has historic significance to Westerners for the WWII bridge and railway that crossed the mis-named River Kwai. Built by Allied prisoners of war for Japanese transport, the harsh conditions led to thousands of deaths. Several cemeteries are filled with tombstones for Australian, British, and Dutch soldiers. The original bridge was destroyed by Allied bombs and has been rebuilt.
