Ascend some 300 stairs alongside a glittering serpent banister to Wat Phrathat, one of the most important Buddhist sites in Thailand. This temple on Doi Suthep, just outside Chiang Mai, is a sacred pilgrimage. Walking slowly around the golden chedi, holding a lotus flower and ringing the temple bells attached to the fence focuses thoughts on selflessness and service to others. Everyone has taken off their shoes, and some are wearing borrowed clothes to cover bare legs and show respect. The view from the hill is toward Chiang Mai.
