In northern Alberta, its provincial capital Edmonton gives winter indoor activities a huge boost with the West Edmonton Mall. The largest in North America, it includes a regulation ice hockey rink as its hub, with a waterpark at one end and an amusement park with roller coasters at the other end. Food courts and 800 shops combine with ample parking to help shoppers spend hours entertained when weather is unfavorable. The Alberta Legislature Building opened in 1913 displays the history of Alberta's growth. Portraits of lieutenant governors and premiers line the halls. Its Beaux Arts style includes a grand staircase and rotunda.
