A tidal lagoon, Lake Merritt is the first designated wildlife refuge in the USA in 1870. Strings of lights surround it with a soft glow at night. Reflections from nearby buildings shimmer on calm water. A path around the lake is popular with joggers and strollers. The newest Roman Catholic cathedral, Christ the Light, opened in 2008. The nearby Grand Lake Theater with its large neon marquee opened in 1926.
