San Rafael, California is the scene of one of many Youth in Arts Italian Street Painting Festivals. For more than 10 years, several blocks in front of Mission San Rafael Arcangel have been transformed for a weekend in June into a tapestry of colorful chalk-on-asphalt masterpieces by artists of all ages. And on Sunday night all the chalk is washed away, so returning motorists don’t cause accidents by leaning out of their vehicle windows to view the art.
