Old Sacramento was originally settled in 1839 and experienced much growth during California's Gold Rush. Old Town is now a National Landmark even though much was lost to severe flooding along the Sacramento River in 1850, 1852, and 1862. The city grew by moving farther from the river. Tower Bridge, opened in 1935, was painted grey, but in 1960 changed to yellow. The span lifts 100 feet above the Sacramento River.
