The Ferry Building at the foot of Market Street, one of San Francisco's most recognizable landmarks, was originally built in 1898 as a transit hub for ferries moving workers across the bay and passengers arriving by rail from throughout the country. Streetcars terminated at the foot of Market Street and carried people throughout the city. Now, a thriving marketplace on the first floor and an outdoor farmers' market on Saturdays have revitalized this historic building.
