The bridges crossing the East River linking Brooklyn with Manhattan are as famous as the skyscrapers that serve as background. The Brooklyn Bridge completed in 1883, features an elevated wooden walkway for pedestrians between opposing directions of vehicle traffic. The Manhattan Bridge opened in 1909, carries New York City subway trains along with cars and bicycles on two levels. The Williamsburg Bridge since 1903 has linked Manhattan's Lower East Side to the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn.
