Cathedral of St. John the Divine

A great cathedral is never completed, just a work-in-progress. So it is with the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine. First chartered in 1873, it was consecrated in 1941, just before Pearl Harbor, and construction halted during the war. Forty years later, construction on its towers resumed, but a fire in 2001 has delayed completion of this huge gothic church in Morningside Heights. The Peace Fountain by Greg Wyatt, completed in 1985, depicts the triumph of good over evil.
